Commit your activities to the Lord, and your plans will be established.
Proverbs 16:3

Looking for a wise saying that expresses how you should dedicate yourself this summer?

This verse says you should commit all your activities to the Lord. Your activities are all the things you’ll do and every conversation you’re going to have. Think of what happens in every 15 minute segment throughout the day—all 3,840 of them this summer. Some will be loud like running the obstacle course with a bunch of kids. Some will be quiet like sitting with a grieving friend. Some will be routine like singing the banana song when the kitchen serves banana splits. Some will be spontaneous like the sneak attack on the neighboring cabin. Some will feel spiritual like sharing prayer requests. Some will feel unspiritual like sitting around the campfire telling jokes. Commit them to the Lord.

All of them.

Committing your activities to the Lord means you want—as best you can—to do all of this with a focus on God. With a desire to see him honored. Not to draw attention to yourself.

It means you want the several dozen things you do today and every day this summer to be done out of a conviction that God has called you to do what you are doing. It means praying before you start talking. It means thinking about God’s kindness to you in Jesus while you are showing kindness to a fellow staff member. It means hoping for the net result of your task list to be increased growth in God’s kingdom. It means striving to resist temptation as you navigate your daily routine.

Today’s proverb is not a global promise that if you dedicate your summer, then God will bless you with all your goals. But it does indicate that if you begin making a habit of committing your activities to the Lord, you’ll start finding your plans lining up with God’s way more often than not.

That’s how wisdom literature in the Bible functions—it says here’s how life usually works for those who follow God. This would be the wise thing to do.
